哮喘是世界范围内的主要慢性疾病之一，也是导致死亡的主要原因之一。有证据表明过去20年哮喘的发病率显著增加，在儿童当中尤为明显。编写哮喘防治全球创议(Global Initiative for Asthma，GINA)的目的在于增进卫生工作者、公共卫生行政部门和普通公众对哮喘的认识，通过全世界的共同努力，提高预防和管理哮喘的水平。GINA提出了一
个哮喘的科学报告，鼓励指南的普及和实施，并提倡哮喘研究的国际性合作。
