  • Clinical observation on isolated congenital hypertrophy of retinal pigment epithelium

Objective To observe the clinical features of congenital hypertrophy of retinal pigment epithelium (CHRPE). Methods The clinical data of 13 CHRPE patients including visual acuity, slit-lamp microscope examination, indirect ophthalmoscope examination and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) were retrospectively analyzed. The patients, 9 males and 4 females, with the mean age of 27.8 years. Results All patients were unilateral, without systemic diseases and no subjective symptoms in majority. Only 30.77% of initial diagnosis was correct, other diagnosis include choroidal nevi, old chorioretinopathy or no diagnosis. The round or oval black lesion was found in ocular fundus of all patients, 7.69% was located on the optic disk, 46.15% was located on the inferior temporal retina, 30.77% was located on the superior temporal retina, 15.39% was located on the inferior nasal retina. 92.31% was pigmented CHRPE and 7.69% was non-pigmented CHRPE. FFA showed blocked fluorescence and transmitted fluorescence in the lesion, few eyes were found dilated capillary vessel and fluorescent leakage on the late stage of FFA, most eyes had normal retinal vessels. Conclusion The isolated CHRPE is round or oval black lesion in ocular fundus which lack of subjective symptoms, mostly located on the peripheral retina; the FFA characteristics showed blocked fluorescence and transmitted fluorescence, and CHRPE often misdiagnosed as other disease, it should be combine the ocular fundus manifestation with the FFA to diagnose properly.

  • Association between Chinese eye exercises and myopia onset in children and adolescents: a meta-analysis

Objective To systematically review the association between Chinese eye exercises and myopia onset in children and adolescents to provide a theoretical basis for clinical prevention of myopia. Methods The PubMed, Web of Science, EMbase, The Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, WanFang Data and CBM databases were searched from inception to March 2022 to collect observational studies about the association between Chinese eye exercises and myopia onset in children and adolescents. Two reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was then performed using RevMan 5.3 software. Results A total of 28 studies were included, including 217 112 subjects. The results of meta-analysis showed that doing eye exercises, doing eye exercises ≥2 times per day, doing eye exercises regularly or consistently, doing eye exercises seriously and doing eye exercises correctly and normatively were the protective factors of myopia onset in children and adolescents. Conclusion Current evidence shows that doing eye exercises, doing eye exercises ≥2 times per day, doing eye exercises regularly or consistently, doing eye exercises seriously, doing eye exercises correctly and normatively can prevent myopia onset in children and adolescents. Due to the limited quantity and quality of the included studies, more high-quality studies are needed to verify the above conclusion.

  • EYE SOCKET RECONSTRUCTION

Eighteen cases of loss or obliteration of eye sockets from trauma or tumour were repaired with various methods: skin graft, postauricle flap with tempopostauricular blood vessel, forehead flap with temporal blood vessel and temporal flap with subcutaneous pedicle. Following 1 to 5 years follwup, the results were good and the improvement on outlooking was remarkable. The skin grafting was a simple and applicable method but it needed a longer time of blepharorrhaphy. The flap transfer was more complicated but suitable for the obliteration of the eye socket accompanied with depression deformity, but it usually would result in a secondary cicatricical malformation at the region around the eye. Thus, it was important to select a best operative method according to the specific condition.

  • Clinical analysis of ocular manifestations related to carotid artery stenosis

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics and mechanisms of ocular manifestations related to carotid artery stenosis. Methods The general clinic data and related ocular manifestations in 124 patients with carotid artery stenosis were retrospectively. Results In the 124 patients, 36 (29%) had ocular manifestations, and 28 (22. 6 %) complained the ocular discomfort as the first symptom. Among the 36 patients, 31 patients (86.1%) had been disclosed unilateral or double stenosis of internal carotid artery by carotid Doppler ultrasound examination, and the result of digital subtract angiography revealed middle and severe degree of internal carotid artery stenosis in 8 and 23 patients respectively. There was no statistic difference of incidence of ocular manifestations between 67 patients of severe internal carotid artery stenosis and 34 patients with middle one(chi;2test,P =0.266 2,P>0.05). The ocular manifestations included amaurosis fugax (52.8%),acute decline or loss of the visual ability and defect of visual fields (36.1%), binocular diplopia (13.9%), ptosis (13.9%), and persistent high intraocular pressure(2.8%) one patient might had several ocular manifestations simultaneously. In 36 patients, central retinal artery occlusion had been diagnosed in 4, venous stasis retinopathy in 1,central or branch retinal vein occlusion in 6, neovascular glaucoma in 1, and anterior ischemic opticneuropathy in 2. One patient with double occlusion of internal carotid artery didnrsquo;t have any ocular manifestation. Conclusion Carotid artery stenosis, especially internal carotid artery may lead to acute or chronic ocular ischemic lesions, and the occurrence of ocular manifestations in chronic ocular ischemic lesions relates to compensa tion of collateral circulation;patients with ocular ischemic lesions are recomm end to undergo a routine carotid artery examination.  (Chin J Ocul Fundus Dis, 2006,22:376-378)

  • Characteristics of severe ocular detonator explosive injury and the therapeutic effect of vitreoretinal surgery

Objective To observe the clinical characteristics of severe ocular detonator explosive injuries and to evaluate the therapeutic effects of vitrectomy on it. Methods Clinical data of 37 consecutive patients (65 eyes) with severe ocular detonator explosive injuries were retrospectively analyzed. The patients included 36 males and 1 female with the average age of 28.6 years. The biocular injuriy was in 31 cases (83.8 %), and one-eyed injury was in 6 cases (16.2%). A total of 48 eyes had severe explosive injury. The visual acuity was no light perception in 9 eyes in which 3 eyeballs were obviously atrophic, light perception in 28 eyes, hand moving in 4 eyes, and counting finger/33 cm in 7 eyes. Vitrectomy was performed on 46 eyes, in which 41 had severe ocular explosive injury. There were no vitreous surgery indications in 13 eyes of 19 eyes didnprime;t undergo surgery; the other 6 eyes didnprime;t undergo surgery due to the atrophic eyeballs or economic reasons. The treating time after trauma was within 1 week in 7 patients (18.9%), 1 week to 1 month in 13 (35.2%), and more than 1 month in 17 (45.9%). The follow-up duration lasted 6 months to 2 years after operation with the average of 8.6 months. Results In 65 eyes, the occupation ratio of conjunctival foreign bodies was 66.2%; corneal foreign bodies was 46.2%; vitreous hemorrhage was 70.8%; intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) was 69.2%; retinal shocking injury or optic nerve blasting injury was 56.9%. The visual acuity improved in 33 eyes, remained unchanged in 25 eyes, and decreased in 7 eyes. In 46 eyes which had undergone vitrectomy, IOFB injuries was in 35 eyes (76.1%); the visual acuity increased in 26 eyes (59.5%), remained unchanged in 13 eyes (28.3%), and didnprime;t cure in 7 eyes (15.2%) in which 2 eyes underwent ocular enucleation and 5 eyes were atrophic. The increasing rate of visual acuity in the patients who accepted the treatment more than 1 month after injury was low. The occupation ratio of monocular blindness was 51.4% and biocular blind was 8.1%. Conclusions Most of severe ocular explosive injuries by detonator are with IOFB. causes of the high blinding rate are late treatment and serious injury. Strengthening the diagnosis and treatment of retinal shock and optic nerve blast, and performing vitrectomy as soon as possible can improve prognositc visual function of injured eyes.

  • Dynamic continuous emotion recognition method based on electroencephalography and eye movement signals

Existing emotion recognition research is typically limited to static laboratory settings and has not fully handle the changes in emotional states in dynamic scenarios. To address this problem, this paper proposes a method for dynamic continuous emotion recognition based on electroencephalography (EEG) and eye movement signals. Firstly, an experimental paradigm was designed to cover six dynamic emotion transition scenarios including happy to calm, calm to happy, sad to calm, calm to sad, nervous to calm, and calm to nervous. EEG and eye movement data were collected simultaneously from 20 subjects to fill the gap in current multimodal dynamic continuous emotion datasets. In the valence-arousal two-dimensional space, emotion ratings for stimulus videos were performed every five seconds on a scale of 1 to 9, and dynamic continuous emotion labels were normalized. Subsequently, frequency band features were extracted from the preprocessed EEG and eye movement data. A cascade feature fusion approach was used to effectively combine EEG and eye movement features, generating an information-rich multimodal feature vector. This feature vector was input into four regression models including support vector regression with radial basis function kernel, decision tree, random forest, and K-nearest neighbors, to develop the dynamic continuous emotion recognition model. The results showed that the proposed method achieved the lowest mean square error for valence and arousal across the six dynamic continuous emotions. This approach can accurately recognize various emotion transitions in dynamic situations, offering higher accuracy and robustness compared to using either EEG or eye movement signals alone, making it well-suited for practical applications.

  • When to treat with vitrectomy and the outcomes of open-globe injured eyes

Open-globe injuries (OGI) result in complicated and diverse conditions with different mechanisms and anatomical locations, which lead to completely different outcomes based on when to perform pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) after trauma. The PPV operation time points are generally divided into early (0 - 3 days), delayed (4 - 14 days), and late (> 2 weeks). There are still some controversies about the PPV time points after OGI. Injuries with intraocular foreign bodies or high risk of infection usually need early surgery to reduce the occurrence of endophthalmitis. However corneal edema and vitreous hemorrhage can increase the difficulties for early diagnosis and surgery. If there is choroidal hemorrhage or severe trauma in the back part of the eye, delayed intervention can allow the blood clots to be liquefied and removed easily. But there is higher incidence of postoperative complications. Late surgery can reduce the difficulty of PPV, but the increased incidence of proliferative vitreoretinopathy may lead to severe retinal traction, tears and postoperative scar formation.
