  • MTT ASSAY AS A CHEMOSENTIVITY TEST FOR RETINOBLASTOMA

MTT assay was presented in this paper and used in 3 cases of retinoblastoma afert enucleation to evaluate the clinical effect of different chemotherapeutic agents. The results showed that the sensitivity of anticancer agents were various in different cases of retinoblastoma. The combining treatment of tow anticacer agents together was seemingly preferable to a single use. When a single drug was chosen,it was advisable to use carboplatin, cisplatin, mitomycin C or etopside. If a combination of 2 anticancer drugs were applied, vincristin with carboplatin or cisplatin will give a better effect than others, but vincristin is not sensitive when applied alone. • Unilateral anterior temporal lobectomy in patients with bilateral temporal lobe epilepsy and dominant seizure-onset in unilateral temporal lobe

ObjectivesTo study surgical outcomes and safety of unilateral anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) in patients with intractable bilateral temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and dominant seizure-onset in unilateral temporal lobe. MethodsTwenty three carefully selected patients with bilaterial TLE and dominant seizure-onset in unilateral temporal lobe were enrolled and divided into surgery and medicine groups according to the treatment.Seizure control were recorded for 2 to 5 years.Changes of full scale of intelligence quotient(IQ),and overall quality of life (QOL),percentage of therapeutic satisfaction, and surgical complications were analyzed 2 years after enrolling. ResultsFavor seizure control (Engel Class I and Class Ⅱ) reached 66.7% (10/15),60% (9/15),and 50% (5/10) at 1,2 and 5 years follow-up after unilateral ATL respectively, the percentages in medicine group is 12.5%,0% and 0% accordingly, and there were significant differences in seizures controls between patients with unilateral ATL and cases with medicine.Significantly differences were also found in changes of patients'QOL and full scale IQ at 2 years follow-up between surgery and medicine groups, and average score of overall QOL improved 5.27±6.45 in surgery group, and declined 1.40±3.58 in medicine group. In ATL group, patients with short preoperative history of seizure presented more favor seizure control than those with long preoperative history, and patients with favor seizure control and short preoperative history of seizure had more chance to improve QOL and IQ after ATL. ConclusionIntracranial EEG is vital in diagnosis of bilateral TLE.Unilateral ATL presents favor seizure control and did not render serious memory and IQ injury in carefully selected patients with true bilateral TLE and dominant seizure-onset in unilateral temporal lobe.

  • Exploration and Practice of Methods and Processes of Evidence-Based Rapid Review on Peer Review of WHO EML Application

After 38 years of development, the procedure of selection and evaluation of the World Health Organization Essential Medicine List (WHO EML) is increasingly scientific and formal. However, peer review for the applications of WHO EML is always required in a short period. It is necessary to build up a set of methods and processes for rapid review. The most important items for the rapid review of WHO EML peer reviewers are: 1) to confirm the requirements and identify the purposes; 2) to establish the research questions and translate the questions into the ‘Participants, Interventions, Comparators, Outcomes, Study design' (PICOS) format; 3) to search and screen available evidence, for which high-level evidence is preferred, such as systematic reviews or meta-analyses, health technology assessment (HTA), clinical guidelines; 4) to extract data, where we extract primary information based on the purposes; 5) to synthesize data by qualitative methods, assess the quality of evidence, and compare the results; 6) to provide the answers to the applications, quality of evidences and strength of recommendations. Our study established a set of methods and processes for the rapid review of WHO EML peer review, and our findings were used to guide the reviewers to fulfill the 19th WHO EML peer review. The methods and processes were feasible and met the necessary requirements in terms of time and quality. Continuous improvement and evaluation in practice are warranted.

  • Influence of Health Education on Medicine-Taking Compliance of Chinese Hypertensive Patients: A Bayesian Meta-Analysis

ObjectiveTo systematically review the influence of health education on medicine-taking compliance of hypertensive patients, so as to provide scientific evidence for health decision-making. MethodsLiterature search was performed in CBM, CNKI, WanFang Data and VIP databases to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 1998 and 2013 concerning the effect of health education on medicine-taking compliance of hypertensive patients. Two reviewers independently screened the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted the data, assessed the methodological quality of included studies, and then conducted Bayesian meta-analysis using WinBUGS 14 software after heterogeneity-test by using Stata 10.0 software. ResultsA total of 19 RCTs involving 3 751 participants were included. The results of Bayesian meta-analysis showed that the health education group was superior to the control group in medicine-taking compliance with a significant difference (OR=4.46, 95%CI 3.698 to 5.358). ConclusionHealth education could enhance the medicine-taking compliance of Chinese hypertension patients significantly.

  • Data visualization of multiple linear regression analysis practiced by R Studio software

ObjectiveTo provide method references for data visualization of multiple linear regression analysis.MethodsAfter importing data to R Studio, this paper conducted general descriptive statistics analysis, then constructed a linear model between independent variables and the target. After checking independence of observations, the normality of the target, and the linearity between variables, this paper estimated coefficients of independent variables, dealt with multicollinearity, tested significance of estimates and performed residual analysis to guarantee that the regression met its assumptions, and eventually used the fitted model for prediction.ResultsThe multiple linear regression analysis implemented by R Studio software had better visualization functions and easier operation than traditional R language software.ConclusionsR Studio software has good application value in realizing multiple linear regression analysis data visualization.

  • Compound Chinese Herb for Cancer Pain: A Systematic Review

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herb compared with an analgesic drug in the treatment of cancer pain. Methods We electronically searched CBM (1990 to 2008), CNKI (1990 to 2008), VIP (1990 to 2008), The Cochrane Library (Issue 3, 2008), and MEDLINE (1990 to 2008). Relevant journals and conference proceedings were also handsearched. The quality of the included trials was assessed according to the criteria recommended by the Cochrane Handbook for systematic reviews of interventions and meta-analyses were performed for homogeneous studies using the Cochrane collaboration’s review manager 4.2.2 software. Results Five randomized controlled trails (RCTs), all published in Chinese, involving 590 participants, were included. The quality of all RCTs was graded C (low). Meta-analyses were not performed due to heterogeneity. Instead, descriptive analyses were conducted. The results showed that as for the total effective rate in pain-relieving, Zhentongsan (RR=1.11, 95%CI 1.00 to 1.24, P=0.05) and Xiaozhengzhitong paste (RR=1.35, 95%CI 1.02 to 1.78, P=0.04) were more effective than Indometacin, with significant differences. There were no significant differences between Duyiwei capsule and Indometacin, and so were between Huajianbadumo as well as Shebingzhitong paste and Tramado. In terms of early potency, there were significant differences between Zhentongsan (SMD= –?9.87, 95%CI –10.84 to –8.89, Plt;0.000 01) as well as Xiaozhengzhitong paste (SMD= –8.74, 95%CI –10.164 to –7.32, Plt;0.000?01) and Indometacin, and so were between Shebingzhitong paste and Tramadol (SMD= –2.24, 95%CI –3.00 to –1.49, Plt;0.000?01). There were no significant differences between Huajianbadumo and Tramodo. With regard to the durative effect on pain-relieving, there were significant differences between Xiaozhengzhitong paste and Indometacin (WMD=4.78, 95%CI 2.99 to 6.57, Plt;0.00001), but not between Shebingzhitong paste and Tramadol. Conclusion Because of low quality of the existing studies, the current evidence is insufficient to define the efficacy and safety of compound Chinese herb, and further large-scale and high-quality RCTs are needed.
